How to choose a VPS location

Where your server sits changes how fast it feels. Picking the right region costs nothing extra, and it is the easiest speed gain you will get.

Why location matters

Data travels fast, but not instantly. The farther it goes, the longer each trip takes. That delay is called latency, and you feel it as lag when you type, click or move windows in Remote Desktop.

As a rule of thumb, every 1,000 km adds at least about 10 milliseconds of round-trip time. Real routes are longer than a straight line, so the delay in practice is higher.

Two questions to ask

  1. Where are you? Remote Desktop feels best when the server is near the person using it.
  2. What does the server talk to? If your programs connect to a service in a certain country, a server near that service reduces the delay between them.

When the two answers differ, decide which delay matters more. For hands-on desktop work, usually your own distance. For automated programs, usually the distance to the service.

Price differs by region

The German region has the lowest prices. Other regions cost a little more, and the Asia-Pacific regions cost the most. Check the pricing page for the exact price in the region you want.

Test before you commit

If you are unsure, remember that you can ask for a full refund within 14 days of any purchase or renewal. That gives you time to try the server and check how it feels.

Tips

  • Pick the region closest to where you will mostly work from.
  • If your team is spread out, choose the region closest to the majority, or to the service you all use.
  • Switching later means ordering a new server and moving your files, so choose carefully. Contact support if you need help.

Frequently asked questions

Which region is the fastest?

The fastest for you is the one nearest to you. There is no single best region for everyone.

Can I change region later?

A server stays in the region where it was created. To change, order a new server in the other region and move your files across. Support can help.

Does region affect my IP address?

Yes. Your server's IP address belongs to its region, so websites see you as a visitor from that country.
