How to choose the right Windows VPS plan

Too small and your server feels slow. Too big and you pay for power you never use. This guide helps you pick a size based on what you plan to run.

Start with what you will run

Write down the programs you want on the server and how many run at the same time. That list matters more than any plan name.

Windows Server itself uses roughly 2 GB of memory when it is idle, so the first part of your RAM is already taken before you install anything.

A rough guide

These are starting points, not promises. Your own software decides the real need.

  • Starter: one person using Remote Desktop, a few light programs, small scheduled tasks or a simple tool.
  • Standard: a few programs at once, light multitasking, or a small internal service.
  • Business: several programs running together, a small database, or two or three people connecting.
  • Pro and above: heavy software, larger databases, many programs at once, or work that uses a lot of memory.

How to size by memory

RAM is the number that most often decides whether a server feels slow.

  1. Add up the memory each program uses. Check the program's own requirements, or see what it uses on your PC in Task Manager.
  2. Add about 2 GB for Windows Server.
  3. Add a margin of around 25 percent so the server is not always at its limit.

If the total is 6 GB, a plan with 8 GB is tight, and 12 GB is comfortable.

Do not forget storage

Windows Server and updates take a good part of the disk. Leave room for your own files, logs and temporary files. If you are unsure, pick the plan with the next step up in storage.

Start small, move up later

If you are unsure, begin with a smaller plan. If it feels slow, check Task Manager. If memory is nearly full, you need more RAM. If the CPU is at the limit for long periods, you need more cores. When you need more, contact support and we will help you move to a bigger plan.
