Windows Server 2016 vs 2019 vs 2022
FOMZE offers three Windows Server versions. They look alike on screen but differ in age, support dates and software compatibility. Here is how to pick one.
The quick answer
Choose Windows Server 2022 unless your software needs an older version. It is the newest, so it gets updates for the longest time. Choose 2019 or 2016 only when a program you rely on asks for it.
Side by side
| Windows Server 2016 | Windows Server 2019 | Windows Server 2022 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Released | 2016 | 2018 | 2021 |
| Based on | Windows 10 (version 1607) | Windows 10 (version 1809) | Windows 10 and 11 generation |
| Mainstream support ended | January 2022 | January 2024 | October 2026 |
| Security updates until | January 2027 | January 2029 | October 2031 |
| Newer security features | Fewer | More | Most |
| Older software compatibility | Widest | Wide | Good, but check old programs |
Dates come from Microsoft's published lifecycle pages. Check Microsoft's site for the latest dates before you rely on them.
What "support" means
While a version is supported, Microsoft publishes security updates. Mainstream support also covers new features and fixes. After it ends, you still get security updates until the later date. After that, the version gets no updates at all, which is risky for any server on the internet.
How to choose
Pick 2022 if: - you are starting fresh and want the longest support - you want the newest security options and TLS settings - your software lists 2022 or "latest" as supported
Pick 2019 if: - your software was built or tested on 2019 - you want a version that is still widely used and well understood
Pick 2016 if: - a program you must use only works on 2016 or older - you understand it has the shortest support left
Check before you buy
- Look at the system requirements of the software you plan to run. They often list supported Windows Server versions.
- If you cannot tell, ask the software vendor, or choose 2019 as a safe middle.
- You choose the version when you order, so decide first.
Updates matter more than the version
A new server that is never updated is less safe than an older one that is. Whichever version you pick, run Windows Update when you first connect and keep doing it. See how to secure a Windows VPS.
Frequently asked questions
Which Windows Server version is best for a VPS?
For most people, Windows Server 2022, because it has the longest support left. Use an older version only if your software needs it.
Can I upgrade the version later?
Upgrading in place can be tricky and may break software. It is usually cleaner to order a new server with the version you want and move your files.
Does the version change the price?
The plan sets the price, not the Windows version. See the [pricing page](/pricing).
